New Programmes for 2020 Academic Year

Motheo TVET College aims to be an entity responsible to initiate and implement economic development projects within the Ocean Economy in the Free State. The College further aims at addressing skills shortage, this is in line with the continuation of the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation’s mandate of expanding on our training programmes.
The following national imperatives were crucial in the College’s decision to change its programme qualification mix (PQM) responding to National Development Plan, Free State Growth and Development Strategy (FGDS) and also responding to the objectives of Operation Phakisa and the Ocean Economy. Operation Phakisa for Motheo TVET College, is a result-driven job creation approach, involving setting clear plans, targets and on-going monitoring of progress and making these results public.
In order to address the above, the College will be offering the following four new exciting programmes in 2020 and going forward, in order to respond to labor market needs. The new programmes are National Certificate N1 – N3 Aircraft Mechanics Course, National Certificate N4 – N6 Farming Management, National Certificate NCV L2 – L4 Primary Agriculture and Maritime Studies Related Programmes.

N1 – N3 Aircraft Maintenance Course
For this programme admission requirements are Grade 11, Level 4 in English, Level 4 in Mathematics and Sciences and a keen interest in Aircraft Mechanics as field of study. For a National Certificate in Aircraft Mechanics subjects such Aircraft Maintenance Theory, Engineering Science, Mathematics and Engineering Drawing will be offered at our Hillside View Campus. This programme can secure you a career opportunity as an Aircraft Mechanic, Aircraft Engine Maintenance Technician or Helicopter Mechanic.

N4 – N6 Farming Management
With this programme the College takes post school opportunities to the farming community to ensure that the country’s food security is in skillful hands. The admission requirements for farming management are Grade 12, Level 4 in English, Level 4 in Mathematics and Sciences as well as a keen interest in agricultural studies as field of study. For a National Certificate in Farming Management subjects such as Data Management Farming, Financial Management Farming, Maintenance Management Farming and Management Farming will be offered. It is for this reason Plot 32 and Zastron Satellite Campus have been chosen as sites of offering to host this exciting programme. Duration of three years is all you need to have a Diploma in Farming Management N4 to N6 for 18 months and a practical experience for 18 months. Career opportunities to this programme one can be a Farm Manager or Agricultural Products Representative

L2 – L4 Primary Agriculture 
The admission requirements for Primary Agriculture, a student must be older than 16 years, passed Grade 11, Level 4 in English, Level 4 in Mathematics and keen interest in agricultural studies as field of study. In order to graduate for a National Certificate (NCV) in Primary Agriculture subject such as English, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Soil Science, Plant Production, Animal Production and Agri-Business must be completed at Plot 32. This qualification takes three years to complete, each of the levels 2, 3 and 4 will take one-year full time. Through this progamme students will acquire skills and be able to get employed and also become self-employed in the agricultural sector. Job opportunities for this programme are farmer or farm line management. This vocational intensive training is in line with government policy on Rural Development and Food Security. It is intended to enable agriculture to make a larger contribution to poverty alleviation as well as enhance national and household food security.

Maritime Studies Related Programmes
For Maritime studies admission requirements are Grade 12, Level 4 in English, Level 4 in Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy and keen interest in Maritime studies as field of study. Certificate in International Trade Level 2 and Certificate in Freight Handling Level 3 (both Learnerships) will be offered, each certificate requires a period of a year to complete. National Certificates in Boat Building NQF Level 2-4 for a duration of three years. Followed by a compulsory add on Maritime qualification in Standards of Training Certificate and Watch-keeping for sea farers (STCW) for a duration of six months. Furthermore, there will be forklifting skills qualification which requires six months to complete. Job opportunities for this programme are warehouse supervisors, port and terminal operators, marine electricians, forklift drivers and operators just to mention few.

All prospective students can apply via the College online registration by visiting https://motheo.coltech.co.za. The final closing date for all application is 13 January 2020. The applicants must complete the online application form and upload the following applicable information on the system: certified copy of identity document, certified copy of next of kin’s identity document, certified copy of proof of address, original study permit or certified copy of study permit and a certified copy of passport of non-South African citizens. The College selection committee will inform the prospective students of their provisional acceptance as students at the College. The College will constantly be in contact with these students’ by sending them emails and text messages.
Funding is available from NSFAS and through seta related bursaries for students to be enrolled in these new programmes. Students can contact our Student Support Officials at Central Office on 051 406 9429 for guidance with regard to financial assistance. The financial assistance for students will cover the following expenses: Tuition fees, accommodation, transport costs and living expenses.

TVET COLLEGES BURSARY SCHEME

In order to facilitate access to the National Certificate (Vocational) qualification, the Department of Higher Education and Training has made bursaries available. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) administers the bursaries on behalf of the Department of Higher Education and Training.
Who may apply for the DoE TVET College bursary scheme?

  • Registered students for the new National Certificate Vocational Programmes (NQF Level 2 – 4)
  • A South African citizen
  • In need of financial assistance with necessary proof
  • Able to demonstrate potential for academic success
  • without parents i.e. an orphan;
  • unemployed parents;
  • being a member of a family headed by a single parent or a single legal guardian with an annual income of less than R12 000 per year; and
  • employed parents with a joint netto income of less than R10 000 per month
