The Southern African Mathematics and Science Teacher Intern Programme (SAMSTIP) aims to get to the root cause of skills shortage within South Africa, which is a lack of quality mathematics and science teachers. The programme focuses on quality education provided by ISASA member schools to produce mathematics and science teachers, by increasing the number of school-leavers from disadvantaged communities to pass mathematics.

ISASA is a non-profit organisation and is Southern Africa’s biggest, oldest and most inclusive independent (private) schools association. The organisation serves more than 800 schools in South Africa; Namibia; Botswana; Zambia; Lesotho; Swaziland; Angola and Mozambique, who in turn educate over 180 000 pupils.

ISASA represent a range of educational levels, religious affiliations, socio-economic and cultural communities. The organisation aims to create an environment whereby quality education is available to all students across southern Africa.

ABOUT THE SAMSTIP BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

SAMSTIP, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and Investec, are inviting PGCE students to apply for the SAMSTIP Teacher Internship Bursary, for the 2022 academic year.

Students who aim to pursue studies towards Senior and Further Education and Training (FET), specialising in Mathematics and Sciences (Physical, Life or Natural), can apply for the 1 year Post-graduate Certicate in Education (PGCE), for studies at UNISA.

The bursary aims to address the need for qualied mathematics and science teachers in South Africa.

MORE ABOUT THE SAMSTIP BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE, SERVICE CONTRACT & SELECTION

The bursary will cover the following expenses: UNISA tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, small monthly stipend and an allowance for transport and accommodation.

Over and above the bursary award, students will be given the following opportunities: training at ISASA member schools, provided with teaching and learning resources and technology, mentorship from qualified school teachers, academic enrichment programme.
After graduation, students will be required to teach at a public school – the period of employment will be equal to the duration of bursary funding received (1 year of employment for every 1 year of bursary cover)

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and may be invited to complete an entrance assessment. After the entrance assessment, candidates will be invited for an internal interview, thereafter candidates will be interviewed by a potential host school and provisionally placed.
Shortlisted candidates will also be required to apply to UNISA and thereafter a final selection will be made.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAMSTIP BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be under the age of 30 years old
  • You must be a final year undergraduate student OR you must have completed an undergraduate qualification with credits in Mathematics AND one of these subjects: Life Sciences or Natural Sciences or Physical Sciences
  • You must NOT be a Graduate already registered for a PGCE at a tertiary institution
  • You must meet the university requirements and have been accepted to study towards a PGCE qualification for the 2022 academic year
  • You must have completed Mathematics AND one of these subjects: Life Sciences or Natural Sciences or Physical Sciences at a tertiary institution (undergraduate qualication) up to a minimum of 2nd year (NQF Level 6) and the other up to a minimum of 3rd year level (NQF Level 7)
  • You must intend on studying towards a PGCE (Senior and FET phase only) qualification at UNISA in 2022
  • You must have a clear criminal record
